Newcastle close to finalising deal for popular Brazil international who was rumoured to leave St James’ Park

Newcastle is about to extend the contract of a fan-favorite midfield player, who the team was hoping to trade in the summer due to a breakdown in negotiations.

After several productive meetings with Joelinton and his representatives, Newcastle is reportedly close to signing the player to a new contract.

According to The Telegraph, the agreement is almost done, and the Magpies want to announce the extension soon.

It’s believed that, considering the difficulty of finding a successor, getting the midfield player committed to a new contract was their main priority before the season ended.

Eddie Howe had been pursuing the contract for a while, but financial issues led to a standoff between the player and the club.

Joelinton, a flexible midfielder who can also play on the left wing and as a number 10 and striker when necessary, is regarded as a key component in Howe’s tactical scheme.

With just 15 months remaining on his current contract, the club anticipated listing him for sale during the next transfer window in the event that an agreement could not be struck.

It’s true that there were early reservations about keeping the 27-year-old on board earlier in the year, but talks have reportedly moved along favorably and have been going on behind closed doors for a few weeks.

Even if the last elements need to be approved and agreed upon, everything is moving in the correct path.

Joelinton and fellow Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes would become the club’s biggest paid upon completion of the transaction. Four years are anticipated to pass during the contract.

Joelinton signed a club record £40 million contract to join Newcastle in July 2019 from German team Hoffenheim.

Under former coach Steve Bruce, he started out as a striker but had little success. But Howe used him as a box-to-box midfielder, and ever since, he has become one of the team’s main players.
