‘Excellent’ – Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones hails January signing

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has said Conor Coventry was ‘excellent’ against Derby County last night.

Charlton Athletic won 2-1 away at Pride Park in League One after goals by Alfie May and Karoy Anderson in the second-half after turning the game around against the promotion chasing Rams.

Coventry, 23, played the full 90 minutes for the Addicks as they secured a valuable three points against Paul Warne’s side.

Jones hailed the midfielder and said after the match, as per the official club website: “I thought Conor Coventry was excellent tonight, in how he went about his work. Especially given he’s been out of the team. I’ve demanded stuff from him and he’s come back today and reacted wonderfully well.”

Coventry was signed by Charlton in January from West Ham to give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

He rose up through the academy ranks of the Hammers and went on to play 10 times for their first-team. The ex-Republic of Ireland youth international had loan spells away from the Premier League side in the Football League at Lincoln City, Peterborough United, MK Dons and Rotherham United to get experience.

The Londoner needed to leave the London Stadium as his pathway into David Moyes’ starting XI was blocked due to the abundance of options that they have at their disposal in his position and he has made The Valley his permanent home now.

Charlton are currently fighting to avoid dropping into League Two and their win at Derby is a big boost to their survival hopes.

They are now sat in 19th place and are four points above the drop zone. However, teams below them like Cheltenham Town and Port Vale still have games in hand.

Jones has made a positive impression since taking over from Michael Appleton. His side are back in action this weekend with a trip to Northampton Town as they look to keep their momentum going.
