City bolster squad ahead of title run-in with signing of Brazilian international:

Bárbara, a goalkeeper from Brazil, has signed a contract with Melbourne City that runs through the end of the current campaign.

The former world champion from Brazil has played 69 times for her nation, competing in four Olympics and five FIFA World Cups, where she took home a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Games.

In addition, having won the 2018 Copa America Femenina, Bárbara offers championship-winning experience from the highest echelons of international football.

Bárbara has had a fantastic career, playing elite football for clubs in Italy, Germany, and Sweden, most recently with Brazilian team Flamengo.

“I’m thrilled to be playing in Melbourne,” the recent City recruit exclaimed. “I’m thrilled to be here and hope to be able to contribute all 20 years of experience to the team.

“I want to express to the supporters that I will always give it my all and try my best.

“I want to be able to contribute to the team and make an impact in Melbourne, just like I have in every club I’ve visited.”

After losing Canadian international Lysianne Proulx to NWSL team Bay FC in a Liberty A-League record-breaking departing transfer, City needed a new number one.

The 35-year-old may make her City debut this weekend when they play Brisbane Roar at Perry Park. She has already begun practicing with her new colleagues.

Head coach of Melbourne City Dario Vidosic stated, “Bringing someone of Bárbara’s caliber and experience into the squad is a huge boost as we look forward to the most important part of the season.”

“We are thrilled to have her join our team; her track record in big competitions and elite leagues worldwide speaks for itself.

“We’re thrilled to have secured someone of Bárbara’s caliber so quickly, and I have no doubt she’ll be a great addition to not only our team but the league. We lost a great goalkeeper to an exciting opportunity in Lysianne Proulx.”
