Sheffield Wednesday should push for new Leeds United agreement

Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer business has been impressive and it’s been a big part of their revival.

Despite enjoying much of their play in the wide areas this season, Sheffield Wednesday may be looking for a new winger in the summer. Ian Poveda, an internal loan option, may be the solution.

Although Wednesday started the season in terrible shape, most of their happiness has come from players like Anthony Musaba, Marvin Johnson, and Djeidi Gassama, who all provide the Owls with breadth moving forward.

However, a change of fortune has been made possible by the loan arrival of Championship winger Ian Poveda on transfer deadline day; therefore, Danny Rohl and his team will need to press for a new contract moving ahead.

Why Sheffield Wednesday need to push for a new Leeds United agreement

Ian Poveda has reestablished himself with the Owls in the Championship.

Poveda was expected to succeed at Elland Road, if not better, after making occasional but noteworthy appearances in the Whites’ Premier League debut under Marcelo Bielsa, when players like Raphinha and Jack Harrison shone.

However, loan stints at Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers didn’t exactly work out as planned.

It wasn’t the simplest journey for the London-born winger, who only managed 36 games across his two stints at the Lancashire pair. During the two seasons, he scored only four goals.

36 appearances for Leeds suggests that Daniel Farke doesn’t consider Poveda to be at the top of the hierarchy, especially considering that players like Willy Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville, and Daniel James are ahead of him. Because of this, one would imagine that Poveda would be open to departing rather than signing a new deal with the Whites, which would be extremely beneficial to the Hillsborough team financially.

Why Ian Poveda would be a great permanent signing for Sheffield Wednesday

Poveda has only played in five games for the Owls, but since he joined the team, their results have significantly improved.

The Owls’ supporters, who have witnessed their team win two straight games—at home against Bristol City and away at relegation-threatened Millwall—exude confidence in their chances of staying in the league. With the exception of the 4-0 loss to Huddersfield, Poveda even contributed to the victory over Birmingham City in just his second game. As such, a predicted loss to Leicester shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Poveda has already started four games for Wednesday and appears to be a long-term member of the team. As a result, he would be an asset to the squad in any tier, especially if they play League One football the following season.
