3 managers Cambridge United target after surprise Neil Harris exit

Cambridge United saw manager Neil Harris snapped up by former club Millwall earlier this week in a surprise move for all involved.

While Millwall’s move to sack Joe Edwards may have been expected amid their Championship struggles, few would have expected them to go for Cambridge United boss Harris as a replacement. However, he has since returned to The Den on an 18-month deal.

Now, the League One club will be tasked with finding a replacement. Barry Corr takes temporary charge again, but a new boss will be sought.

With that said, here are three out of work managers Cambridge United should consider moving for…

Dino Maamria

Tunisian boss Maamria has proven himself as a pretty safe pair of hands in League One, though he’s been out of the game since leaving Burton Albion in December. He can help consolidate Cambridge United’s place in the league and should have some good connections thanks to his previous roles in the game.

The 52-year-old would likely be keen on the chance to take another third-tier job too.

Gareth Ainsworth

Perhaps an ambitious suggestion given his previous success in League One, but Ainsworth is definitely a manager worth putting the feelers out for. The QPR stint displayed some of his unique methods but at the Abbey Stadium, building a real mentality could perhaps help them puch above their weight a bit looking forward.

You could perhaps forgive Ainsworth for holding out for a job maybe a little higher in the league though.

Derek Adams

Last but not least is former Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City and Ross County boss Derek Adams. His third stint with the latter ended in challenging fashion and the 48-year-old is currently out of the game.

He knows it all when it comes to relegation scraps and has shown an ability to look up the league with his sides before too. He could be a decent option to consider for Cambridge United.
