Manager makes specific request of Sheffield United

Ben Brereton Diaz of Sheffield United has been informed by Chilean manager Ricardo Gareca that he must learn Spanish in order to succeed under him as a star for his nation.

As they prepare for the upcoming international break, the Chilean manager has been speaking with Radio Agricultura about the Blades player.

Since joining Sheffield United on loan from Villarreal at the close of the January transfer window, Brereton Diaz has been playing fantastically.

He arrived at the Spanish team in the summer, but he had trouble settling in and didn’t live up to the kind of play that made him a desirable free agent at Blackburn Rovers the previous season.

He’s hit the ground running at Sheffield United, though, quickly establishing himself as a key player with two goals in three Premier League games so far.

If he continues his current form, he will be a shoe-in for Chile’s squad that will take on Albania and France next month.

Gareca is in full preparation for those games and has been meeting players this week as a result, holding a virtual meeting with the Sheffield United man and highlighting one area in particular he wants him to improve in.

“It will be important for him to speak Spanish quickly,” La Cuarta report him saying.

“Because it is the way to communicate, to integrate into the group and it is something predominant.

“(He is) a very kind boy and very predisposed to work. (He) has handled the left sector with diagonals (but) from what we talked about he has no problems playing in the front of the attack.”
