Rotherham United boss Leam Richardson has said goalkeeperhad ‘no motivation’ to leave during the January transfer window.

Rotherham United managed to keep hold of the stopper beyond the deadline last week.

Johansson, 25, joined the Millers back in 2020 and has since become an important member of the team.

According to a Rotherham Advertiser story, Richardson stated: “He had no motivation to leave.” He was really explicit about that. He’s enjoying himself and is having a great year.

He seems to be at ease, and he undoubtedly wants to finish the season strong. Who knows what will happen next? The fact that he is here is really beneficial.

Man from Rotherham United stayed put
For Rotherham, holding onto Johansson during the winter is very beneficial. The South Yorkshire team will struggle to hold onto him in the future if they are demoted from the Championship this season, since his contract ends in the summer of 2025.

Last month, The Rotherham Advertiser reported that Sheffield United, led by Chris Wilder, was monitoring his development as they battle for survival in the Premier League.

Before relocating to England, Johansson was a young player for Stuvsta and Hammarby. Despite being signed by Aston Villa in 2015, he never played for the Midlands team at the senior level.

Rather, he earned experience in non-league football on loan with Alfreton Town before being permanently acquired by Leicester City.

The Sweden international, who made his national team debut the previous year, made a splash three and a half years ago at Rotherham and has since taken over the top slot at New York Stadium.

He has played 128 matches for the Millers to date and will be eager to assist them avoid dropping into League One in this campaign.

Richardson’s team will soon face two challenging exams. This weekend, they will first take on Leeds United at Elland Road before facing Hull City at home on Tuesday.
