Oxford United battle for Brentford ace, reporter claims….

Michael Olakigbe, a winger for Brentford, is expected to join Oxford United and Peterborough United on loan.

According to reporter Darren Witcoop, Oxford United is in competition with Peterborough United for the loan of Brentford winger Michael Olakigbe.
In addition to competing for Olakigbe’s services, Oxford United and Peterborough United are both vying for promotion from League One. According to Witcoop, Bristol Rovers, a third-tier team, are also eager to reach an agreement before Thursday’s deadline.

The 19-year-old, who has played for Brentford in eight senior games, has been granted permission to leave the team temporarily in January. As the transfer window nears its end, competition to sign him appears to be intensifying.

Olakigbe, who was capped by England at the U18 and U20 levels, joined the Bees in 2022 after attending Fulham’s academy. Before joining the Cottagers, he also attended the QPR academy, so if he moved this winter, it would be his first experience playing football outside of London.

At the start of the season, he made his Brentford debut, starting a Carabao Cup match against League Two Newport County, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Rodney Parade with Thomas Frank’s team winning on penalties. The young player has made 11 more appearances since his debut, eight of which have been as substitutes in the Premier League.

Decision time for Olakigbe

Olakigbe could be set to become a part of either Oxford United or Peterborough United’s promotion push.

After losing 3-1 to the Gas on Saturday, the U’s slid to 7th place in the League One standings and are currently battling for a top six finish. But by season’s end, the Posh appear set to be in the running for an automatic promotion.

With a game remaining against the league leaders, Darren Ferguson’s team is now in third position, one point behind Bolton Wanderers in second place and three points behind Portsmouth at the top of the table.

Olakigbe might be the extra push needed for any team to reach their objectives this season, therefore the time is ticking on the race to bring him in.
