Positive conversations between the Middlesbrough head coach and the club’s administration are believed to have taken place. Michael Carrick is eager to sign a new deal and prolong his time at the club.
Carrick’s present contract expires at the end of the following season, and although the head coach seems unfazed by the situation, everyone is keen to complete an extension.
Carrick claims he still “loves” being on Teesside, despite Boro’s dismal recent performance that has seen them fall out of the Championship play-off picture.
Although Carrick and chairman Steve Gibson have not yet signed a contract extension, it is understood that they have had fruitful discussions and that they agree on goals and future plans. Nevertheless, the head coach maintains that there is no urgency to sign a new contract.
Carrick stated: “It’s not a big deal for me, so I wouldn’t say it’s major.” Here, I’m content. I’m at ease with it. Everyone is clamoring for updates on something, but nothing has changed. I am still here, and I am loving it here.
“With the players, as I’ve stated, things will unfold organically over time. There are no agendas, no deadlines, and no pursuing. I’m just working hard here.
“I’m happy, there are no issues, nothing has changed, I love it here.”
Carrick attended the club’s 2004 Carling Cup winning heroes’ reunion at Middlesbrough Town Hall last night together other Boro supporters.
The current head coach is motivated to have his own success at Boro after witnessing the significance of that cup-winning team to Teesside supporters.
“There is hunger,” he declared. Naturally, small things can give you a tiny boost, but that doesn’t lessen my desire for achievement.
“I know there are traditions and history in football that you should respect, and you know what it means to people and how good teams appear, but it hasn’t motivated me at all, in my opinion. I was done needing it. That was present already.
“I work and behave in a way that I think is best for myself and those around me. I make an effort to work hard and give it my all while doing it in a courteous manner.
