Ian Evatt Outlines Premier League Promotion Goal

Ian Evatt, the head coach of Bolton Wanderers has acknowledged that leading the team to the Premier League is his ultimate objective during his tenure at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Under manager Sam Allardyce at the time, the Trotters made their second trip to the English premier league in 2001. After spending 11 seasons in the promised land, Bolton was finally demoted at the conclusion of the 2011–12 season, during Owen Coyle’s tenure as manager.

Regretfully, since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Wanderers have not been able to make it back to the Premier League and were relegated from England’s third division in the 2019–20 season, all the way down to League Two. This was because of a point-per-game computation system.

Bolton Wanderers had a challenging season since the historic team went into administration concurrently with Bury’s EFL expulsion. Still, the squad survived, and with Evatt in the dugout for the upcoming season, they made a fresh start.

While playing some exquisite football, the former Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers defender led Bolton to promotion back to League One at the first attempt. With three games remaining, Evatt’s team is now in third place in the same division this season, seven points behind leaders Portsmouth.

Evatt stated that leading the team back to the Premier League is his ultimate ambition in a recent interview with the EFL Podcast, however he acknowledged that this may take some time [quotes via Bolton News]:

“Making the playoffs, winning the EFL Trophy, stabilizing and getting promoted in my first season, and now having a real opportunity”

“We truly feel like we are just getting started, even though this road has been amazing. He went on, “A lot of effort has been done behind the scenes to rebuild the foundations so that we can have ongoing success.

“We want to return to the Premier League; that is our aim and goal, but getting there will take time and a process. Right now, we are halfway through that journey.
