FSU Football Staffer Accepts Position With Auburn Football

The former off-field staff member is headed to the SEC after working in the ACC for the past few years.

Nearing spring football season, coaching changes are still occurring across the nation. Over the previous few years, Florida State has lost a number of its off-field employees to other positions; John Garrett, the director of scouting, left for Duke at the start of 2024.

Kenyatta Watson, a former member of the FSU off-field staff, accepted a job offer from Auburn earlier this week. Watson will become the Director of Recruiting Research and Strategy for the Tigers, reporting to head coach Hugh Freeze. He was Director of Scouting and Pro Liaison at Georgia Tech for the previous two years prior to his departure.

It’s intriguing that the timing coincides, since Watson’s time with the Yellow Jackets is coming to an end only a few months after his son Kenyatta Watson II signed up for an NCAA Transfer. at the previous three years, Watson II was a reserve defensive backfield and special teams player at Georgia Tech. Last month, he arrived at Georgia State.

In 2021, Watson started working as a college coach at Florida State. After nine months on the team, he was Director of Player Relations and Pro Liaison for the Seminoles before leaving for Georgia Tech. His connections in the Peach State were invaluable when it came to recruiting.

Watson coached youth and high school football for more than ten years before coming to work in Tallahassee. Over a five-year period, he served as Grayson High School’s director of football operations and recruiting. During that time, the team produced approximately 120 players who were awarded college scholarships.

Along with serving as director of the Adidas Middle School Showcase, Rivals NextGen Showcase, MVP Middle School Showcase, and Elite Talent Middle School Football Showcase, Watson also coordinated the Under Armour Middle School All-American Game and the UA Next Middle School Camp Series.

He played his college ball at Boston College where Watson developed into one of the top returners in Big East history.

Freeze has made a handful of coaching changes this offseason. Auburn brought in new hires such as offensive coordinator Derrick Nix, co-defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, and co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.
